Itinerary

Day 1:  Arrival/SJO airport pick-up

Upon arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport you will be met by your guide and transportation. For those who arrive early enough (many flights don’t arrive until evening), enjoy the view, plants, birds and butterflies at Casa Amanecer or arrange your own optional excursion. Our welcome dinner will be in the hotel’s restaurant that evening.

Lodging: Casa Amanecer B&B

Day 2:  San Ramón – Small family-owned coffee tour, waterfall/waterpark

Your first morning, wake up to some of the world’s best coffee and typical Costa Rican breakfast. Then we are off to meet the family that grew and processed that coffee at their small operation in the mountains just outside of town. After that, we will transport you to Las Musas waterfall and water park to have some lunch, go for a swim, go down the water slide, hike to the waterfall, or just relax.

Lodging: Casa Amanecer B&B

Day 3:  San Ramón – Cloud forest/bird watching, sugarcane “trapiche”

This morning, you will wake up a bit earlier, have breakfast, then partake in an easy-to-moderate hike in the local cloud forest, where many birds abound. You may even get a glimpse of some foot prints of the elusive Tapir or jaguar, some of the many nocturnal mammals that inhabit this ecosystem. Then, a short visit at a traditional sugarcane mill, or “trapiche”. After lunch at a nearby small, family-owned outdoor “soda”, we will make our way back to Casa Amanecer to relax for a while, then dinner

Lodging: Casa Amanecer B&B

Day 4:  San Ramón/Arenal – Zip line, chocolate tour, hot springs

Today we make our way north to the Volcano Arenal. Along the way, we make a stop at San Luis Adventure Park to glide along the forest canopy by zip-lines. There’s even a “Tarzan swing” for the more adventurous. Then, our next stop is at Two Little Monkeys Chocolate Tour to experience first hand how one of our favorite foods is grown and processed. You will be able to sample and buy some of their own chocolate. Finally, we will end up at Los Lagos Spa and Resort. Check into your room, relax in the hot springs, swim up to the bar, and get some dinner at their restaurant.

Lodging: Los Lagos Spa and Resort

Day 5:  Arenal – Hanging bridges, volcano, hot springs

We will spend a good part of the day taking in the awe-inspiring views, plants and birds at Mistico Hanging Bridges. Views of the volcano are just breathtaking. We’ll have some lunch nearby, then head back to Los Lagos for some relaxation, time in the hot springs pools, and some dinner.

Lodging: Los Lagos Spa and Resort

Day 6: Arenal/Sarchí/San Ramón – Sloth watching, traditional oxcart factory, souvenirs

After breakfast, we will pack up and head back south to San Ramón. Along the way we will stop to visit some “osos perezosos” or sloths in their natural habitat at a family-owned conservation area called Sloth Territory. Then to Sarchí, the small town where the traditional painted ox cart is made. We will visit a 100-year-old water-driven ox cart factory. They have an amazing assortment of souvenirs that you may also peruse. Rest and relax at Casa Amanecer.

Lodging: Casa Amanecer B&B

Day 7:  Esterillos Oeste – Beach day

After a hearty breakfast, we will make our way up, then down the mountain roads to spend some time at the beach. Once we arrive, settle into your room. Then, enjoy the pool or venture just steps away to one of the most beautiful beaches Costa Rica has to offer.

Lodging: Hotel Bejuco

Day 8:  Manuel Antonio/Esterillos Oeste – Guided wildlife tour, beach day

Arise early today to visit world-reknowned Manuel Antonio National Park. You will walk with an experienced guide with a high-powered telescope to spot some elusive wildlife. Some wildlife, however, such as the White-faced Capuchin Monkey will spot you from quite a distance and venture close to check you out. Enjoy the beach within the park, or head back to the hotel to enjoy your own little stretch of beach before having dinner.

Lodging: Hotel Bejuco

Day 9:  Orotina, San Ramón – Souvenirs, relaxation, sending-off dinner

This morning, we will pack up and head inland, back to San Ramón. We’ll make a stop at El Jardín for lunch and another chance to purchase souvenirs if you would like to. Then we’ll make our way back through the mountains to Casa Amanecer, where you may relax, settle back into your room before a celebratory, sending-off dinner with salsa dancing lessons.

Lodging: Casa Amanecer B&B

Day 10: Departure/SJO airport transfer

After a hearty breakfast, you will be transferred back to the Juan Santamaria Airport for your flight home.
