Let’s Build a New Classroom for These Amazing Children!

We’ve joined forces with Stephen Duplantier and his brand new magzine, Neotropica to informally form Friends of Escuela La Chiripa. Our current undertaking is Escuela Chiripa, a very small rural school that is badly in need of a new classroom. It is located in the heart of the vast banana plantations in our neighboring community to the north — Sarapiquí. The children of migrant banana workers from Nicaragua are currently packed into a small, leaky structure to attend classes. The banana company, Rebusca, is generously contributing the materials for the building. Now all is needed is a little funding to pay two experienced builders, and some strong backs and dedicated hearts of volunteers to mix mortar and build the basic structure.

Return frequently over the next couple months to see photos and progress reports. If you would like to get involved, consider making a donation or pledging a bit of your time to help raise the walls. You might even consider buying a chance to stay one free night at our place (See below).

Our goal is to raise $4,000, primarily to pay the salary of two experienced, local builders to oversee the construction and help manage the volunteers.
