The Panzer Valdivia household/B&B strives to be a model in sustainability and social responsibility, both on a local level and a global level. The hosts hold the belief that our resources and space on this Earth are finite and that each one of us can and must do his or her part to preserve this precious planet for our children and their children. So, at Casa Amanecer, their business plan encompasses offering guests comfort and hospitality, peace and relaxation, with sustainability as a backdrop.
These are some of the charactaristics and activities that make Casa Amanecer an environmentally-friendly and socially responsible vacation spot:
• Local, organic fruits and vegetables are used when available and bought directly from the producer
• A vegetarian lifestyle is followed, with enormous benefits to individual health and our environment
• Biodegradable soaps and cleaning agents from local manufacturer Florex are used
• Large windows and skylights, along with flourescent light bulbs reduce electricity use
• Clothes and linens are sun- and air-dried, whenever possible to further reduce electricity use
• Garbage output is greatly reduced by using re-usable shopping bags and buying less packaged goods
• Garbage output is further reduced by recycling paper, plastic, aluminum, steel and composting kitchen and yard waste
• All gray water and black water go to an onsite septic tank and drainage field, protecting our rivers from contamination
• Native grass is planted in the green areas, requiring less water and is less prone to plant invaders (weeds)
• Yoga is practiced to maintain the body and create balance
• Participation in community leadership, serving on the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity, Costa Rica
